On July 8, 2005, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) voted in favor of a restructuring plan, which if implemented would downgrade the ________________ EEOC office, which serves your constituents, from its current status as a “District Office.”   EEOC has now sent its restructuring plan to Congress for approval.

District Offices are EEOC’s largest type of office, in terms of staff and functions.   The average EEOC District Office has 63 employees, while EEOC’s only current field office employs just 37 employees.   Since 2001, EEOC has lost over 500 employees, which is 15% of the workforce.   EEOC’s back log of pending cases is exploding.  Downgrading our local office will mean even less dedicated EEOC employees and resources will be available to serve victims of employment discrimination in our state.  It will also mean longer wait times to resolve civil rights violations.

In each District Office that EEOC has targeted for downgrading, the amount of charges of discrimination filed has either stayed the same or increased.  Because there is not less work to be done to combat workplace discrimination, EEOC should not be shrinking resources in our state.

Here is how you can stand up for civil rights:

(1) Do not approve EEOC’s restructuring plan;

(2) Support Senate Appropriations Committee language, which diminishes the impact of the plan; and

(3) Insist on additional appropriations language, which calls for the backfilling of vacancies created through voluntary terminations, e.g., retirement.

Thank you for helping to ensure that your constituents continue to have access to a full service EEOC office in our community.

Sincerely,
